Kinja'd!!!

I had no idea how badly the US got shafted on the Galant, especially the eighth generation (1996-2003). Twin-Turbo 2.5L V6 “rated” at “276 hp” / 271 lb-ft. Equipped with either a 5-speed manual or the INVECS-II self-learning 5-speed semi-automatic based on Porsche’s Tiptronic transmission.

Of course you have 4-wheel drive with the Type-V models but it’s the Type-S models that got the Active Yaw Control (AYC) from the Evo. That’s a torque vectoring rear diff on your station wagon. BMW wouldn’t even give you this with their Dynamic Performance Control (DPC) until the X6 came out a decade later!

But honestly I’m just astounded by how aggressive the eighth gen Galant looked compared to the US model.

I had never heard of this car until it popped in the used car lot in GT6.

An AWD wagon with more than 300 hp (yeah yeah, ‘’276 hp’’...) and killer looks?!

Many miles and races won later, I have a newfound appreciation for the Galant.

I bought a base one about a year ago for a beater really through the Alps and Pyrenees. After fixing a lot of deferred maintenance it was so good the €500 beater is now the DD of my parents.

This one has the 4G63. 1997, 2.0L i4, Sohc, NA, 138 or so HP. Slushbox.

I would like one but they are heavy beasts like a modern car or an Audi and not really “Japanese” and more an Audi clone. The really Japanese cars were more of an early 90s thing though but there were some survivors up to the late 90s like the X100 Toyota Chaser for example. The disadvantage is all the crazy tech in the Gen 7 VR4 were removed and it was made a more regular car. All this is because of the economic bubble bursting there. It’s MUCH cheaper than earlier cars. However the car looks cooler and has much more support than a Gen 7.

To give an idea by what I mean the Gen 7 had all soft touch materials, crazy japanese electronics like all wheel steering, CRT TV, automatic air vents for AC that occilated, engine that revved to 8000RPM, and many other crazy things and high luxury items you would get on the more classic Japanese cars that just don’t exist anymore. This 8G is basically a regular car aside the drivetrain.

However I wouldn’t import a Gen 7 I WOULD Import a Gen 8. Why? They look awesome. Also the Gen 7 has nil support and an engine that needs a build if you want much more than stock power. Though that V6 (also in the FTO) is probably one of the best sounding ever made.

The black one where you say “it looks like a BMW competator” it looks like my Mustang except with 4 doors to be honest.

It was possible to buy the Galant new in New Zealand at one point but they were around $70,000 in early 2000s money. it would be cool if Mitsubishi brought this car back as it would be a change from their Crossovers which aren’t that bad to be honest.
