This was visiting one of my neighbors today. Truck looks good and the wheels caught my eye, but I also was curious about the “Titan” sticker on the back of each side of the bed. Any historical facts from the Oppo braintrust?

From what I found with a quick Google search, others have had this question, without a concrete answer: Is it a dealer-installed package or a factory option or something individuals added?

It appears to be on a number of examples, so doesn’t appear to be something individuals did. Doesn’t show up in lists of factory options, so it appears to be a dealer-installed appearance package.

I almost bought a used T-100 when I ended up with my Ranger, passing on it because I wanted door access to the extended cab. I don’t know why I care about this one (maybe because last month I was kicking around getting a used truck to have around and these crossed my mind again), but I thought I’d turn to Oppo to see if there could be expert confirmation.

Interesting. My guess is that it’s another ultimately meaningless special edition package, as had been done on the 1st gen Tundra and the first gen 4x4 pickup. It is most likely an SR5 T100 with an extra decal.

TAHOE was a package available on S-10s back in the day before it was a model unto itself. Also, I knew a guy that had an EXPLORER package on an old F-150. Sometimes options packages are so good they spawn entire vehicle lines.

*also S-10 is a shorted version of Chevy’s Scottsdale 10 trucks before they became Silverados

And Ranger was a trim of the F-Series before it was a model, too.

I think it’s similiar to the old Tacoma “Thunder” packages. Just some graphics and different wheels.

Looks as if it is connected to Southeast Toyota Distribution, Inc.

My guess is that they had planned to create a sort of TRD-lite unit for the dealers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, NC and SC. The focus would have been attempting to make the T-100 more appealing to fullsize truck buyers but once Toyota let it be known they were going to build a V8 powered larger truck as the successor (especially with the Ford lawsuit against the use of “T-150"), and with TRD parts out the gate, then the dealership-focused “Titan” package was no longer a need.

Looks as if the “Titan” name with Southeast Toyota Distribution was approved for public register in March of 1996 and abandoned at the end of August in 1997. Toyota got “Tundra” approved in Feb of 1999. Nissan got “Titan” approved for register in Oct of 2003.

There we go. I knew Oppo would come through. Thanks, Wobbles.
