Interesting story in today’s Wall Street Journal. I wonder if Snowden is a Trump supporter...

The idea of this guy getting a pardon is utterly ridiculous.

A lot of odd people are Trump supporters.

I didn’t vote for Hillary and very much disliked her but I also didn’t vote for Trump. People saying a CEO is going to “drain the swap” was laughable to me. Dude is literally one of the Oligarchs. I thought that if Hillary was elected she would fill her government with lobbyists and people who paid her bribery money. Trump literally skipped the lobbyist middle man and appointed the CEOs. He has a Goldman Sachs exec working for him.

I saw all this coming and i’m confused how some people were so TrumpGullible. IDK how his supporters are still pro-trump. It just goes to show me that they really don’t care about that shit. Though where i’m from almost everyone is a Trump supporter I KNOW the real reasons why they supported him. Most of them are conspiratards as well so that works it’s way in and Trumps strange personality, much like Alex Jones’, makes them think he can’t be one of the controllers. It’s like they are conspiracy stupid, they think if you talk shit about the “elites” that you can’t be one of them not even considering another conspiracy theory that the “elites” could use a person to control them. I am not a conspiracy theorist but those people are the most idiotic people in existance. They will believe literally anything so long as it’s not normal belief and it makes them feel special.

I’ll say this, I work for the DOD for a contract in an IT environment and have for about 8 years now. There are a lot of potential Snowdens, they just have a wife and kids so they won’t do what he did. I knew several conspiracy theoirst crazies and extreme libertarians as well as far-left liberals through the years. Snowden I would put in the extreme libertarian category which is why I doubt Trump support. He’s like a hero to a lot of liberals but they have no clue that he is basically an anarchist who wants to abolish almost all government functions they hold dear.

No....he’s not. Just to be clear, not that he doesn’t aspire to be in their little club, or wish to claim that he is, but I highly doubt Trump is in the insider groups of the wealthiest families in the US. Trump is ‘new money’ in the fact that he still has to work for it (in that he wouldn’t be rich if he didn’t have active gains and income). The Oligarchs are living off of the passive interest and proceeds of their several generations ago relatives.

Not that this will improve his performance as president, but if you think Trump is one of the elite, he’s not. He’d love you saying that, but in actuality, he’s a guy who made a little money and loves people knowing it.

How is Trump “new money” when his dad was already a made man himself? Bill Gates is in this group of people as well as George Soros and Warren Buffet. They are all newer money than Trump.

Buffet’s grandfather was a grocer, his dad a congressman who didn’t make as much money as Trump’s father for sure.

The “elites” are more than the Rockerfellers and Rothschilds. The people who voted trump in didn’t even talk about them.

Gates, Soros, and Buffet are basically the Alex Jones triad of anti-human-agenda and anti-american polical agenda and the people behind Trump talked about the exact same people running the show. Trump sits on the table those people do, in fact Soros even has business dealings with him in the past.

All the people the alt-right (not THAT alt-right but the “anti-elites” conspiracy theorist alt-right) complain about are just like Buffet and Soros. They will occasionally talk about Rothschilds but that doesn’t dominate their news sites and radio waves.

Trump’s dad was able to give him enough money to get him started. The “oligarchs” parents give them enough money that they or their children or grandchildren (and on and on) never have to work.

As well, if you are talking Buffett and Soros...compared to Trump, they have money that they’ve turned and churned several times. Trump has at times had a high net value, but it was always highly leveraged, and highly dependent on the value of the real estate market. That’s why he or his companies have declared bankruptcy several times. Gates is different in that he had one piece that was worth an ass-ton, but yet, his money is clear and not leveraged at all.

I guess I just want to be clear in that by calling Trump an Oligarch, not only is it not true, it’s something he desperately wishes were true, and one of the reasons he ran for president. He desperately wishes to be seen as powerful...he desperately wants to be part of that group that he’s not.

This was a fascinating thread with well considered comments. What you’ve said in your final paragraph is exactly what I would have put and I would add, that even without all the billions, Hillary and Bill are in that circle. And this probably irks Vladimir Putin as much as anything else about the Clintons. It is downright alarming to me how Donald Trump is kissing Putin’s ass, and the entire planet must be laughing at us right now.

Did any intelligence higher-ups hang for Snowden’s escapades?

What irritates me more than anything about the Trump ascendancy is that the liberal elites trotted out HRC in the first place. I saw this as a disaster from Day One, and my liberal extended family all said, “But at least she’s not Trump!” I was an Obama voter, twice, and I’d vote for him again. It’s too bad Mitt Romney ran against Obama, because if Mitt were running this year, I’d have voted for him over HRC in a hot second. But Mitt was smart enough to see that Trump would have destroyed him and Mitt would be in the same shallow grave as all the rest of the Republican contenders.

It’s going to be an interesting year. Along with Trump not being an oligarch -- comment(s) below — he’s also not a politician , and it’ll be interesting to see if the real politicians throw him under the bus.

Trump’s also not a politician, but everyone else in Washington is, and it’ll be interesting to see if they throw Trump out with the bathwater.

I was being euphamistic. Trump’s gotta be the most patently dangerous president in American history. Then again, the rest of the planet have problems of their own right now.

Didn’t Trump get so much money from daddy that if he had simply put it in index funds, he’d have the same fortune today? Hard to lose money in Manhattan real estate (or casinos), but sometimes it happens. Not a self-made man, but a good promoter.

It’s fun to examine over what part of the .001% someone is attached to.

Divided by 4 living kids, that’s chump change to the elite. (to be clear, the “Trump” in that quote is Fred, Don’s dad:

From what I recall (too lazy to look it up, and wikipedia lol), daddy gave him at least (assuming equal dispersal) ~40MM to play with around 1975, when he was allowed to take over the family business. This should have yielded at least ~3BN if placed (reinvested) in index funds.

For as good of a promoter as he is, he isn’t rich out of some kind of raw awesome business acumen, first and foremost, he is rich because his dad was rich. I agree he’s not a classic oligarch (they pull his strings just like with who he is replacing, and who will replace him), but he’s not Horatio Alger, either.

Not laughing and not terrified. We’re in a perpetual disappointed facepalming motion. This is not your first time, the 2004 reelection of W comes to mind.

Similar things are happening in Europe by the way, so I’m not implying any superiority here. The fact free populists that prostitute themselves to the fears of the conspiracy loons are on the rise everywhere. They don’t tend to get roughly half of the votes like in the US, but they are gaining traction none the less.

True, but what we found outrageous yesterday is the new normal today. Not just in the US. I see it where I live as well. The election of Trump is taking this to the extreme though, but it’s lot like he came out of nowhere. You had this Republican nominee cycle on one hand and the election of the inept (for a presidential election based on personality/image) Clinton on the other.

How a person acquires their wealth has nothing to do being an oligarch. though he is nowhere near Kock levels of involvement, it cannot be denied that he has used his wealth to gain access and influence.
