I used to watch Dakar every year religiously. I sneaked out of bed to watch the late night episodes of our national sports network covering the race. I loved it, it used to be a dream to participate in it once, but I really dont want to do it on a motorcycle*, and to do it in a car (4x4), is something I simply cant afford.
*= It is not too expensive when you do it solo-style on a motorcycle. In Dutch (I dont know the English term), but they call them the ‘cabinet riders’, because each of the solo-riders get a cabinet in which they keep their stuff, unlike a full team that have all of the resources they need. The solo-riders are pretty much the most badass dudes riding out there, considering their gear and the way everything is set up for them.
