So here’s some Oppo Conversation Street material...

Kinja'd!!!

I came across this post on Reddit, some guy was asking if it’s possible to get CarPlay working on an earlier F30.

It occurs to me, it seems like in newer cars, there is simply no way to get any form of aftermarket audio, specifically head units. Best you can do is replace some speakers and add an amp, but in newer interiors, it seems like a head unit is simply impossible, due to the layout and how integrated the systems are to the car.

Luxury car makers aren’t the only ones, even Mazda moved to similar setups, where you have the screen and controls as separate units in the cluster and the centre console:

So makes me wonder, where is the aftermarket car audio market even heading these days, with fewer cars to even install them in? Will it even exist in a few years?

I think the aftermarket car audio system in a few years will be new speakers and new software for the head unit. You can’t physically replace some of these infotainment systems, but you can re-write the software.

Trim panels can be replaced. There’s a pretty good aftermarket for those and producing them is pretty easy. You simply get the dimensions of the trim, CAD up a design that will hold a more standard head unit, and start production. For example, here is a Lancer Double-Din dash kit:

I’m probably going to get myself one of those shortly and do an Android head unit from Pumpkin or Joying.

I really like the simplicity of the single DIN head unit for swaps. But to be honest, I’d probably never bother changing it at all if my car had AUX input to begin with.

I do like that thought, but it isn’t like the factory software is open source or something to develop custom ROMs for it.

As seen by Wikileaks and the Nissan GT-R, you can hack just about anything if you try hard enough.

On newer GM cars at least, the screen is sort of just like a monitor and the actual infotainment module is tucked away somewhere in the dash. I could see the aftermarket industry just creating new modules that hook up to the screen. Keep the nice oem look of the screen in the dash and just modify what shows up on it.

I think that you’re right in that it is dying, but it might take a bit longer. There’s a lot of people still driving older cars that need stereos, and there will always be a high end market for people who need an absurd sound system.

You could retrofit, say, an older BMW CIC head unit with a newer NBT one. But the after market is definitely limited.

Kenwood ones can use Android Auto I’m fairly certain.

I’ve seen some neat approaches to this in the Mk7 VW Golf. It has the infotainment system ‘brains’ in the glove box, and the display on the centre console is just that. Alpine has a (heinously expensive) system that replaces the brain box and display unit with its own, but the really interesting developments are from a couple of manufacturers that have produced replacement display units that run Android, and offer a ‘pass through’ function to access the car’s original infotainment system as well.

With 2015 Golfs like mine lacking CarPlay, I’m sorely tempted by some of these...

Maybe it’ll stem the tide of 150 decibell unroadworthy shit heaps. I do dashboards for a living, and I don’t do stereos. Actually when someone comes to me with electrical issues It’s one of two things: (1)I will remove your undead command start. or (2) I will see a nightmare of technicolor spaghetti and inch thick amp cables/capacitors etc and say : you can have a working car or all this shit, not both. they typically want the stereo.
