Kinja'd!!!

Happy New Year, Oppo! What are your plans this evening? What are your New Year’s Eve traditions? I’ll be making a giant bowl of guacamole for a party. And some black eyed peas for luck. Do you have a fave BEP recipe? Share below!

Also, it’s annoying that you have to google “black eyed peas food” in order for the results to return with photos of the food versus a shitty musical group.

You’ll need:

One bowl of black eyed peas

One bowl of refried beans

Preparation:

Cook bowl of refried beans

Throw black eyed peas in the trash, where they join a Black Eyed Peas album

Eat refried beans :D

We’re having the sunfish I caught ice fishing yesterday for lunch. I’ve never actually had black eyed peas TBH.

I can’t find mine, but this is a similar approximation. Smoked turkey necks can replace ham hocks. Either way, you may want to cook with potato to prevent oversaltiness.

I let them soak over night and in the morning on New Year’s Day, I throw them in the crockpot with the ham bone from Christmas, mirepoix (chopped onions, celery and carrots), enough water to cover the beans, garlic salt, pepper, a Goya ham bouillon packet (for the boost of flavor). Let that cook on low for like 8ish hours and then add some more ham if necessary, hot sauce, apple cider vinegar, and any salt/pepper it might need to round out the seasoning. Eat over rice.

Some people believe in having them as the first meal of the day. My family never did.

Crock pot all the way, with the Xmas ham bone, mirepoix, garlic, a fuck ton of chile flake cause that’s how I roll, maybe some diced tomato but maybe not, thyme, and some chicken stock. Stir in some chopped up ham leftovers at the end. Serve w crusty bread et voila!

I don’t think I’ve ever had black eyed peas?

Do you start from a can? I eat a lot of kidney beans but the canned are way too salty for me so I’ve got to plan in advance to soak my dried kidney beans.

I don’t have time to make them from dry peas, and canned veggies are often too overcooked for me, so I’m gonna split the difference: frozen BEPs.

Since you mentioned you’re using frozen, here’s an idea:

1 lb frozen black eyed peas
1 lb frozen sweet corn
1 large or 2 small shallots, minced
1 red bell pepper, minced
1 cup chopped cilantro
4 green onions, chopped
3 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp lime juice
Salt & pepper to taste

Just thaw the peas & corn, mince/chop the other stuff, toss it all together with the olive oil & lime juice, and you’re done. Can be eaten as a dip or a side salad.

Frozen veggies?

They’re awesome! They’re not boiled to death like what happens with canning, and they last for months (because frozen), so you don’t have to worry about them getting overripe or going bad (more crucial to any veggie that isn’t a bean or pea, which can be stored in dry form for long periods of time, too, of course). You get the best of both worlds: fresh picked quality and taste, and reduced wastage. Oh and, no salt either, unless you buy frozen veggies with sauce.

The raw frozen veggies I find are only corn and peas. I swear frozen carrots were a thing when I was growing up.

On a related note, I dumped some frozen corn, chopped onions, and shredded jalapeño jack into some pancake batter and I regret nothing.

Oh yeah! I mean it’s a loose powder and not a cube, which is nice, but it’s with all the Goya stuff at the store.

They’re not always raw. They’re cooked, but not boiled to death the way veggies need to be for canning. They’re usually flash steamed and microwaving or steaming them in your home kitchen finishes the cooking process. Though you could also just freeze your own fresh veggies, which is what I do with stuff like onions and celery.
